CDI History

Camuscross & Duisdale Initiative took over from the work of the Camuscross Community Steering Group which was set up in 2007 to develop various projects for community benefit.

Our community is situated in the Sleat peninsula in the South of the Isle of Skye and covers the crofting townships of Camuscross, Cruard and Duisdale and also includes Isle Ornsay.

Camuscross & Duisdale Initiative took over from the work of Camuscross Community Steering Group which was set up in February 2007 to develop various projects for community benefit. It became a charity and a community company, limited by guarantee which was incorporated on 22nd December 2008, with the name of Camuscross Community Initiative. When the neighbouring crofting township of Duisdale was added to its area of benefit in 2009 the company was renamed Camuscross & Duisdale Initiative (CDI).

CDI has successfully developed several projects in response to consultation with our community. These have included the development of a local food initiative as well as numerous arts, heritage and cultural projects. A Crofters Olympics was also a mechanism for bringing the community together and to help with fundraising in the early days – it is hoped to one day resurrect these games.

By far the biggest and most ambitious project has been the planning, design and construction of our community building which began in 2011 and finally opened to the public on the 1st April 2017.

Known as ‘the Hub’ during its development following a community ballot to choose a name for the amazing new building the winner was An Crùbh meaning the hub of a wheel.

An Crùbh contains a community shop, post office, café and flexible gathering space. The café and shop business is run by An Crubh Ltd which is a wholly-owned trading subsidiary of CDI, employing a significant number of local people on a mostly part-time basis.

With funding from the Energy Saving Trust electric vehicle charging points including a rapid charging unit have also now been installed.

The gathering place or hall is run by CDI. CDI’s aim is to build some new income streams to help support the already successful businesses to continue to provide the services and facilities our community has asked for to help it to survive and thrive in the 21st century.
